Botox Q & A

What is Botox?

BotoxⓇ is the first treatment of its kind to receive FDA approval and is the most popular nonsurgical cosmetic treatment in the world. Botox lessens the appearance of crow’s feet, forehead lines, and frown lines between your eyes.

The formulation is made from Clostridium botulinum, a substance naturally present in forests, lakes, and soil. In certain concentrations this substance is toxic, but the volume used in cosmetic applications is perfectly safe.

Botox has been used in medical applications for more than 50 years, and in cosmetic applications for more than 15 years. Over that time, Botox has been the subject of more than 500 peer-reviewed articles and numerous clinical studies.

How does Botox work?

Botox works by temporarily impeding the ability of targeted facial muscles to go through their full range of motion. You can still make normal facial expressions, but those muscles can’t pull your skin into the same lines, folds, and wrinkles.

Botox is administered via a series of injections using a very thin needle. It takes three injections to treat crow’s feet, five for forehead lines, and five for frown lines. Botox is also used in other areas of the face.

You’ll begin to see results 24-48 hours after your treatment. Those results last for four months, at which time you’ll find your lines and wrinkles slowly returning. At that point, you can decide if you’d like to extend your results with another round of injections.

Are Botox injections painful?

Dr. Boger is highly skilled at placing Botox injections in the precise location where they have the greatest effect. The needles used are very thin, and your entire treatment takes less than five minutes from start to finish.

You may feel a slight pinch as the needle enters your skin, but there’s no significant discomfort. There’s no need for anesthetics or downtime. In fact, many men and women come for injections during their lunch break and return to work immediately afterward.
