Hyperpigmentation

Hyperpigmentation is a condition where certain patches of skin are much darker than the surrounding skin. An example of hyperpigmentation is age spots, also called solar lentigines. Freckles and the condition known as melasma are other examples. This condition causes a sometimes unsightly, uneven skin tone that many people wish to correct.

How Is It Caused?

Hyperpigmentation results from the melanin in your skin, which gives your skin its color, pooling in particular areas, and making them darker. It can have a genetic or hormonal component but is often triggered or exacerbated by excessive exposure to the ultraviolet rays of the sun. People who frequently tan are much more susceptible to this condition.

How Is Hyperpigmentation Treated?

Wearing 50+ SPF sunscreen and taking other steps to protect yourself from the sun can help prevent your condition from worsening. To address your existing hyperpigmentation, we have a number of options, including a photofacial with our ICON Laser. This involves using Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) to target high melanin areas so that those parts of your skin flake off, leaving more even skin underneath. We can also treat your skin with our Potenza RF microneedling machine, which combines microneedling with radiofrequency technology to smooth and even skin tone and works on all skin types.
